2 students killed in Aztec school shooting, male suspect dead

AZTEC, N.M. (KRQE) - Three people are dead after a school shooting at Aztec High School in Aztec, NM.

Two students are dead, the shooter is dead as well. There are no other injuries reported. According to the San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, no injured people have been transported from Aztec High School.

Police would not release any names, but say the shooter is a man. They would not confirm whether or not he was a student.

Earlier deputies and Lt. Kyle Lincoln from the San Juan County Sheriff Department cleared the building and actively searched the school.

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office has asked parents of Aztec High School to pick up their kids at Mcgee Park at noon.

A former Aztec school board member who went by the scene shortly after it unfolded says this is absolutely unheard of in their small community.

“Tragically the horrors that visited many other communities have come to roost here in Aztec,” Michael Padilla said. He also called the scene chaotic and said there was a massive law enforcement presence.

News 13 spoke to one student who says she heard three gunshots and a classmate came in and said there was a shooting. She says they turned the lights off and hid until it was safe.

The Governor spoke to the bravery of people responding at a news conference Thursday.

“There were several acts of bravery by staff members, teachers and students that were amazing… that actually saved lives,” Governor Martinez said.

The Governor also mentioned the Public Education Department will be making $120,000 availablle to help with response in coming days for counselors and security.

On social media, there is an influx of support for the Aztec community.

A prayer service is planned for 4:30 p.m. at Saint Joseph church.
