BERINO, NM (KTSM) - A Berino man was arrested for his sixth suspected DWI after he crashed into a dry canal around 4:30 p.m. on Friday
New Mexico State Police were dispatched to the crash in Berino, just north of Anthony on Friday afternoon. When they arrived, they met with the driver, identified as 53-year-old Mario Martinez. Officers immediately noticed Martinez had bloodshot water eyes and reportedly detected a strong smell of alcohol.
Martinez also appeared to have slurred speech, confusion and allegedly admitted to drinking before the crash. The officer conducted standard field sobriety tests, which Martinez reportedly failed.
A breathalyzer test revealed that Martinez blew a .18 and .19 - more than twice the legal limit. During the investigation, NMSP learned that Martinez had five prior DWI arrests. He was then arrested and charged with DWI 6th offense and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
