Man Shot in Officer-Involved Shooting in Northeast EP

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - El Paso Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Northeast El Paso.

According to Sgt. Enrique Carrillo, officers were conducting a traffic stop in a marked patrol just before midnight Wednesday night in the 5300 block of Pollard near Keltner in Northeast El Paso.

Carrillo tells NewsChannel 9 that there were three people inside the vehicle during the traffic stop, including a male driver, male front seat passenger and a woman who was a passenger in the backseat.

The officer reportedly asked the front seat male passenger to get out of the car and that's when he allegedly pulled a handgun on the officer. The officer shot the passenger and he was transported to University Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound. No word on the extent of his injuries at this time.

The female passenger in the car was taken into custody on two outstanding criminal warrants for delivery of a controlled substance. No charges are currently pending against the driver, according to Sgt. Carrillo.

The suspect in the shooting will be charged upon release from the hospital. The officer who discharged his weapon is a 4-year EPPD veteran assigned to the Northeast Regional Command. He is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation as is customary in all officer-involved shootings.
