Community mourns retired officer killed in high-speed chase

LAS CRUCES, N.M - Friends, family and law enforcement officers paid their respects to J.R. Stewart on Friday.

Stewart was killed during a high-speed chase on Monday when the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle fleeing from law enforcement.

Stewart’s friend, Rick Ceniceros, told KTSM, "J.R. was a very selfless man. He thought about everyone else before himself. He's going to be missed."

On Friday, hundreds of people showed up to a viewing at Baca’s Funeral Home in Las Cruces. Hours later, friends and family packed St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church.

Chuy Silva, another friend of Stewart’s, told KTSM, “He had a very big heart. Very big heart. He was always involved with a lot of things in the community.”

Services paying tribute to the fallen officer will continue on Saturday. A procession will begin around 8 a.m. at the funeral home and will continue to St. Genevieve’s after making  brief stop at the Las Cruces Police Department.
