Las Cruces, NM (KTSM) - Community activists CAFé are staged protest that briefly blocked traffic on Picacho and Main in Las Cruces to voice their opposition to ICE raids that took place in Doña Ana County Wednesday morning.
Leticia Zamarripa, a spokesperson with ICE confirmed the raids, but said that ICE regularly conducts targeted enforcement operations which additional resources and personnel are dedicated to apprehending deportable foreign nationals.
Zamarripa went on to say that the department does not confirm an operation prior to its completion and will not speculate on future operational activities.
Community members with CAFé held a press conference outside of Loretto Plaza, which is an ICE auxiliary facility. The group then moved to the intersection of Main and Picacho where they were briefly blocking traffic around 4:30 p.m. to protest the raids.
LCPD Police broke up the group blocking traffic and moved them to a sidewalk shortly before 5 p.m.
At the same time, Democratic state leaders met in Santa Fe to also denounce the raids.
