County in search of money for Pellicano expansion project

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - County officials have plans to widen a busy East El Paso street -- but are still searching to find the money to pay for it.

The project would transform Pellicano into a three-lane road in each direction, and also feature bike lanes, sidewalks, and landscaping.

According to officials, the expansion would cost about $18 million, but there's currently an $8 million shortfall.

However, the County could apply for funding from the Metropolitan Planning Organization to make up the difference.

"We'll have to look at all options when it comes to obtaining remaining funding for the project," County Commissioner Vince Perez tells KTSM, "but as of now, the project is still going forward with the design and hopefully we'll have construction this time next year."

The project is currently under design and is scheduled to begin construction in 2019.
