Crews respond to fire at Otero County recycling center

OTERO COUNTY, NM (KTSM) - Fire crews are working to extinguish a fire that broke out in Otero County Sunday afternoon.

Otero County Sheriff Benny House tells KTSM that the fire began at about 12 p.m. at the recycling center located off US 54 North near the Texas-New Mexico state line.

Officials say a large pile of plastics caught fire, which, according to the sheriff, is the likely culprit of the thick, black smoke.

According to House, five fire departments are at the scene, including two from El Paso and three from Otero County.

As of about 1:30 p.m., the fire has not yet been contained. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
