EPE: Power outage caused by unauthorized access to substation

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - El Paso Electric has confirmed that a man who was inside a substation in Central El Paso caused a power outage to about 2,100 customers early Friday morning.

The outage was reported around 6:45 a.m. at the substation on the northern corner of Montana & Trowbridge. 

El Paso Police say they were called to the area around 6:40 a.m. to reports of a drunk disturbing call. By the time they got there, an explosion occurred inside the substation causing the man to be thrown to the ground.

He was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center and later airlifted to the Lubbock Burn Center for treatment.

EPE said in a statement that the person involved was not authorized to be in the substation. Power was restored to customers around 8 a.m. El Paso Police is investigating the incident.

EPPD's Crimes Against Persons Unit is still working to identify the man involved in the explosion.
