El Paso, Texas (KTSM) - Summer break may have just begun, but the director of innovation and tech pilots for EPISD is already looking forward to the 2017-2018 school year.
"EPISD is really excited that this year, all middle schoolers, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, will be getting new laptops," Tim Holt said.
Last week, the EPISD Board of Trustees approved a plan to purchase and lease almost $12 million worth of Apple laptops.
The District says the plan is part of an effort to expand the district's "power up" program, which currently equips high schoolers with laptops.
The new laptops also means EPISD can push existing iPads down to middle schoolers:
"We're excited about that because this creates a modern environment for our students, it creates equity across the District," Holt said.
To pay for the plan, EPISD says it plans to use seven-million dollars in funds approved by voters during the 2016 bond and the rest will come from the District's instructional materials and general fund.
