Father Suspected of Crashing Car on Purpose Charged with Child Abuse

Las Cruces, NM (KTSM) - Las Cruces Police have charged a 22-year-old father with child abuse after they say he purposefully crashed his car while driving his girlfriend and 4-year-old son early this month.

The crash  happened on February 3, when Orlando Torres, 22, and his 23-year-old girlfriend got into an argument. After the argument, his girlfriend called a friend and asked for a ride. Police say that Torres drove up and tried to prevent his girlfriend from leaving.

The two women and the 4-year-old boy were finally able to leave the parking lot in a white Dodge Journey while Torres allegedly followed the pair in his Nissan Altima. As the two women drove toward the Las Cruces Police Department Headquarters, Torres allegedly crashed into the Journey on purpose.

Torres then allegedly got out of his car and punched the windshield of the other vehicle.

The two women continued to drive away and once again, Torres caught up with them and crashed into the Dodge Journey. Eventually, the women were able to make it to LCPD where they filed a police report.

The women and 4-year-old were not injured in the incident.

Torres was arrested and charged with one count of child abuse, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of criminal damage to property. Torres posted bond the following day.
