Former Las Cruces janitor sentenced in child pornography case

LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) - A former Las Cruces elementary school janitor was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday following his conviction on federal child pornography charges.

David Anaya Garcia, 33, of Las Cruces, was arrested in July 2015 after Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) began a federal investigation that led them to Garcia's home in the 2800 block of San Miguel Court in Las Cruces.

During the search warrant, they found a laptop that had five still images and 88 videos depicting child pornography and a thumb-drive containing 56 images and 55 videos of child pornography. The victims are all believed to be between 8 and 13 years old.

The indictment alleges that Garcia downloaded and shared the images and computer through a file-sharing program called Shareaza. There is no indication that any of the children in the images or videos were photographed or filmed by Garcia.

As part of his sentence, Garcia will serve eight years in federal prison followed by five years probation upon release. He will be required to register as a sex offender after his release.
