6 LCPD officers set to deploy on Friday

The hurricane-ravaged people of Puerto Rico are about to get a helping hand from six officers from the Las Cruces Police Department.

The officers are set to leave Friday for the island to help in the relief and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Maria. The Category 4 storm struck the region on Sept 20. The officers were originally supposed to head out in October, but those plans were put on hold.

All the deploying officers volunteered for this m ission. They are:

Sgt. Jaime Quezada, 21-year veteran
Sgt. Thaddeus Allen, 9-year veteran
Ofc. Jose Prado, 10-year veteran
Ofc. Joshua Herrera, 9-year veteran
Ofc. Manny Soto, 9-year veteran
Ofc. Charli Velasco, 2 1/2-year veteran

"We got into this because we wanted to help," said Las Cruces Police Chief Jaime Montoya. "Ask any officer when they started what were they trying to do. This is just another aspect of what we are. Deep down in our hearts, we have a desire for helping people."

The officers will be gone for 14 days and will return just before Thanksgiving.
