EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Border Patrol officers seized 36.7 pounds of crystal meth--which is valued at more than $880,000--at an El Paso port of entry Thursday morning, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Officers made the seizure when a 1998 Ford pickup truck arrived at the Paso Del Norte international bridge from Mexico. A drug-sniffing dog then searched the truck and alerted officers, who later discovered 15 bundles of meth in the backseat.
CBP officlals arrested the driver, a 57-year-old man from Juarez, and turned him over to Homeland Security Investigations to face charges associated with the smuggling attempt.
"This interdiction removes a sizeable amount of crystal methamphetamine from the streets of our communities and the reach of our youth, CBP El Paso Port Director Beverly Good said.
