Lapel Video Released in Deadly Roswell Shooting

El Paso, TX (KTSM) - Roswell Police have released lapel camera video in an officer involved shooting that ultimately left one man dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Wednesday morning.

According to RPD, an officer stopped in front of a Motel 6 in the 3300 block of N. Main Street in Roswell around 2 a.m. When the officer arrived, he spotted a car that was reported stolen out of Albuquerque. A woman was sitting in the passenger seat of the car but the driver was inside the motel.

The driver then walked out of the motel wearing a security guard uniform and briefly spoke with the RPD officer before walking away from him and refusing to stop when the officer ordered him to. The officer followed the man, later identified as Shayne Romero, 30, of Peralta, NM.

While running, Romero is heard firing several shots at the officer before the officer took cover behind a truck and fired his weapon toward Romero, striking him twice - once in the leg and once in the shoulder.

Romero collapsed on a nearby sidewalk where the officer who shot at him approached followed by another officer from the Roswell Police Department. As the officers were ordering Romero to push the gun away from him, Romero shot himself once in the head.

Romero was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The woman who was inside the car during the initial police stop ran away during the incident and hasn't been located by police.

A joint investigatory team involving RPD, Chaves County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police is conducting the investigation into this incident, as is standard protocol for any shooting involving an RPD officer. The two involved officers (the one who fired his weapon, as well as the one who arrived soon after to find the suspect on the sidewalk) have been placed on administrative leave, another part of standard protocol following such an incident.
