Las Cruces Police remind residents of marijuana laws prior to 420 Festival

LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) - The Las Cruces Police Department is urging the community to be aware of marijuana laws prior to attending this week's 420 Festival, it said in a news release Wednesday.

The inaugural 420 Education, Music, and Arts Festival is set to be held April 20th and 21st at Young Park in Las Cruces.

According to Las Cruces Police, the use and possession of marijuana is illegal in New Mexico, except for patients holding valid medical marijuana cards from the New Mexico Department of Public Health. However, it is still illegal for these cardholders to possess or use marijuana in public. Only New Mexico residents can apply for the New Mexico Medical Cannabis Program, the Police Department stressed.

Police also want to remind the community that it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana.

The Las Cruces Police Department has met with festival organizers several times to ensure that adequate signs will be posted in the park to make sure the laws are followed.

Officers will frequently patrol Young Park and surrounding areas to enforce any applicable laws.
