LCPD officer shoots, kills dog while serving warrant

LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) - Las Cruces Police say that an officer serving a warrant on a home shot and killed a dog that allegedly became aggressive toward him Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. in the 700 block of Baca Rd. Tuesday. Officers with LCPD were serving a warrant at the home and had already taken the suspect into custody. One of the arresting officers went back toward the home to speak with a relative of the person being arrested when the dog allegedly came toward the officer.

The LCPD officer fired at least one round toward the female pit bull terrier, killing it. The officer reportedly suffered wounds to his left arm and hand in the dog attack.

The officer will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation as is standard protocol with all officer involved investigations.

The dog will be tested for rabies to determine if the officer will need additional treatment.
