LCPD says drunk mom left young kids with drunk grandmother

LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) - A Las Cruces mother is behind bars after police say she left her two young children with her drunk mother while she left drinking at a friend's home early Thursday morning.

Just before 2 a.m. Thursday morning, LCPD was dispatched to an apartment in the 1200 block of Monte Vista after a 36-year-old man called to report that a 7-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl had knocked on his door asking for a ride to find their mother.

Neighbors reported that the children had knocked on several doors before one called authorities.

The two children took officers to the apartment where they lived with their mother and grandmother. Officers knocked for several minutes trying to get the children's grandmother to wake up and answer the door. They learned that she was intoxicated and had gone to sleep before the children snuck out.

After further investigation, officers learned the kids' mother, Cynthia Jimenez, 33, had been drinking since about 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Around 11 p.m. she reportedly left her two kids in the care of her intoxicated mother and left with a friend to a home on Watson Lane.

Officers got Jimenez's cell phone number and called her to come back to the apartment, which she did- but was allegedly too drunk to talk to officers.

The two children were turned over to the custody of child protective services and Jimenez was booked on two counts of intentional child abuse. She is currently being held in the Doña Ana county Detention Center without bond.
