Local veterans help other veterans in need

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Friday morning several local veterans came together at Hillcrest Church in Northeast El Paso with an important mission.

Today they hit the streets to donate thousands of pounds of food and blankets to other vets that may be going through tough times.

The vets, all volunteers, are from several local veteran groups like the El Paso Veterans and Riders Association. They also had support from the El Paso County clerk.

Organizers say this year they have been able to collect roughly 40,000 pounds of the supplies. It was all donated from local residents and businesses.

One of the veteran volunteers Robert Jeskey says there's something special about helping his fellow veterans.

"Everybody needs a helping hand. It's a love and cup type of thing sharing and sharing experiences and just showing people that it's ok to need a helping hand and that we're there to help you out," Jeskey said.

Organizers say they plan on making several more of these donation runs in the coming weeks.
