9 Things to Know About Jessica Nevarez

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Over the next few weeks, we'll be introducing KTSM's newest faces. Today, we're introducing Jessica Nevarez!

Jessica will be reporting three days a week and will also be forecasting weather on the weekends. She is the second KTSM forecaster to get her start at NMSU's KRWG under the guidance of former KTSM anchor Nick Miller.

Here are nine things you need to know about Jessica:

  1. Jessica is a Mayfield HS graduate. She will graduate this coming May from NMSU with a degree in Journalism.
  2. She was “discovered” by fellow KTSM employees Patrick Hayes and Andra Litton while working the interview circuit at the Garth Brooks concert. Together, they encouraged her to apply for an internship. She completed a summer and fall internship before being hired full time in December 2017.
  3. She is a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. In fact, she’s tried out for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders twice. She goes to the Cowboys training camp and the opening game every year. We won’t tell you how many Cowboys purses she owns.
  4. Because one obsession isn’t enough, Jessica also has an unhealthy relationship with a mouse—Mickey Mouse. She’s a serious Disney fanatic and has been a Disneyland annual pass holder since she was 16. If Jessica wasn't working in news, she says she’d work at Disneyland.
  5. She has a 5-year-old Chihuahua mix named Toby. If she could bring him into the weather center on the weekends, she definitely would.
  6. Before coming to work at KTSM, she worked at her family’s fireworks stand during the holidays. You can still visit Planet Fireworks stands around New Mexico or the Diablo Fireworks store in Anthony – just don’t expect to see her there anymore. She says her days of dealing fireworks are finally over!
  7. Remember the part where we mentioned “discovering” Jessica at the Garth Brooks concert? She’s a huge country music fan! (We can’t confirm or deny that she may have been crying after meeting Garth.) Her favorite artists are Billy Currington, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton, “The King” George Straight and Luke Bryan.
  8. When Jessica first began her journalism studies at NMSU, she wanted to be a sports reporter. After being encouraged by Nick Miller to do weather at KRWG, Jessica fell in love with the green weather wall!
  9. She was basically born dancing. Jessica started gymnastics, cheer and dance when she was a little and kept cheering and dancing for the Mayfield Trojans. She taught dance for three years and was in a dance company at NMSU for four years. Ask her to dance, but only if you can bring it!

Jessica's first day on air will be Friday, Jan. 12. Follow her on Twitter and her Facebook page.
