A Hidden Gem: The Montwood Emeralds Dance Team

A tradition almost 20 years in the making made new again. The Montwood High School Emerald Dancers are what they like to call well rounded from jazz, ballet to even stunts and tumbling. They are working hard to make sure that they are the best in the city.

They are the team that almost wasn't. The Emerald Dancers losing their  long-time coach when she decided to step down earlier this year.

New coach Kristal Nance jumping at the opportunity.

"I ran for it because I knew that there were a lot of teachers trying to get into this position," said Nance.

Nance says the Emeralds are the reigning 'Sun City Classic Champions', a local dance competition.

"Competition season is probably one of the hardest it's constant practices full out every time. We get water breaks but they are really fast we have to do everything as quick as we can to be the best that we can be," said Sarai Santos, a junior and Co-Captain of the Emeralds Dance Team.

Now she says the girls are working hard to make up for lost time when they didn't have a coach.

Celina Cadena, a Sophomore and Co-Captain of the Emeralds Dance Team says she is proud of how dedicated her team is and how they have come together as a family.

"We have supporters that go to the games to watch us and they know that we have expectations and we are going to meet them and we love doing what we do and it shows when we are out there we are here everyday after school practice till 6:45, we work hard."
