Convicted felon charged after Gang Unit traffic stop

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - El Paso Police Department's Gang Unit arrested a convicted felon Sunday evening on suspicion of carrying a gun and body armor.

Jacob DeSantiago, 33, was stopped by officers in the 4400 block of Lawrence off of Gateway North and Dyer just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening. Police say DeSantiago failed to signal before the traffic stop.

The investigation revealed that DeSantiago was in possession of a shotgun and body armor inside the 2013 Ford Fusion he was driving. Court records show that DeSantiago was previously convicted of a felony charge of assault. As a result of his conviction, he is not permitted to carry weapons.

DeSantiago was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Unlawful Possession of Metal or Body Armor by a Felon and outstanding warrants. His bonds totaled $20,873.
