DPS: Chase in Stolen Truck Ends in Red Sands

El Paso, TX (KTSM) - The Texas Department of Public Safety arrested a man early Christmas Eve after a car chase led him to get stuck in the Far East El Paso desert.

According to DPS, they attempted to make a stop on US 62/180 (Montana Ave.) and Flager in Montana Vista around 7:27 a.m. Saturday morning when Troopers attempted to make a traffic stop on a red Ford truck for an equipment violation.

That's when the driver of the truck, later identified as Jose Melendez, 26, tried to outrun the Troopers, leading them into the Red Sands area before getting stuck in the sand.

Texas Parks and Wildlife, El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Border Patrol assisted with Melendez's apprehension.

Troopers say that the truck was stolen out of El Paso. Melendez was arrested and charged with evading arrest in a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence and possession of marijuana.
