EPCSO: Scammers target El Pasoans, again

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - They're at it again. Scammers are trying to get money out of unsuspecting victims claiming to be employees of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office once again.

The telephone scam works like this: the scammer calls the victim and tells them they have ignored jury duty summons, unpaid tickets, warrants or court summons and they must either submit a payment or turn themselves into the Sheriff's Office Headquarters.

The scammer requests that the victims buy Money Trax cards or gift cards in order to get their cases cleared. They go on to ask the victim to meet them at EPCSO Headquarters at 3850 Justice Rd. to exchange the money cards.

As always, EPCSO says they never call anyone by phone to advise them that they missed jury duty. They also say they will never call anyone by phone requesting payment for outstanding criminal warrants.

If you've been a victim to one of these scams, please contact the El Paso Police Department non-emergency number at (915) 832-4400 or the El Paso County Sheriff's Office non-emergency number at (915) 832-4408.
