Sheriff Richard D. Wiles and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office have announced the implementation of new technology that will identify offenders in real-time by using their iris.
After the photo is taken the digital image, along with a photo and critical criminal justice information, is encrypted and stored in a secure, national registry and will be able to identify offenders and inmates.
The program called I.R.I.S. is short for 'Inmate Recognition and Identification System'.
Sheriff Wiles says "as long as they got an eye to stand they are good to go and so it's got a lot of benefits..much quicker much more accurate and we're excited about this technology".
This makes El Paso County Sheriff's Office the first law enforcement in Texas to implement this technology.
