No, El Chapo Did Not Escape a Juarez Prison

El Paso, TX (KTSM) - A widely circulated post from El Diario de Juarez  Wednesday morning claims that famed Mexican drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera escaped the Cefreso 9 prison in South Juarez early Wednesday morning.

We're sorry, but there's no other way to put this. You got punked.

The article is part of an El Diario tradition on Dia de Los Inocentes, the Mexican equivalent of April Fool's Day. In past years, the Diario has posted articles on the holiday claiming that the Equis in Juarez was architecturally unstable and had to be torn down and other fun, yet viral, pranks.

The article posted Wednesday was no different. It claims that a massive manhunt was underway to catch El Chapo, who managed to escape the high level security facility. While El Chapo has managed to escape prison on two other occasions, this time-- it's simply not true.

El Chapo has been in custody at Cefreso 9 since May 7 and is currently in the midst of an international legal case to extradite him to the United States for charges associated with his massive drug trafficking ring.

So, a word of warning to everyone who may not be associated with this Mexican tradition-- be careful who you believe today! Happy Dia de Los Inocentes!
