DASO: Woman armed with axe shot, killed by reserve deputy

Doña Ana Co., NM (KTSM) - Multiple law-enforcement officers are investigating the death of a woman armed with an axe after she was shot by a reserve deputy on Halloween night.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. in the 5500 block of La Pradera Road in the Fairacres area. Doña Ana County Sheriff's Deputies say they got two different 911 calls from residents reporting a blonde woman wearing blue jeans and a top on their property.

The first caller said the woman came into his home, claiming someone was trying to kill her. The second caller told dispatchers that the same woman was inside a shed on his property.

Several officers, including sheriff's deputies, a reserve deputy and an officer from the Mesilla Marshal's office arrived on La Pradera Road and approached the shed the woman was in. Investigators say she came out of the shed with a sledge axe and came toward the reserve deputy who then fired at least two shots at the woman.

The Mesilla officer attempted CPR, but attempts were unsuccessful. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives learned before the incident, the woman allegedly stabbed a man inside a pickup truck after an argument on I-10 near La Pradera.

The driver of the truck told investigators that the woman was just released from an El Paso mental health facility earlier in the day and had made suicidal statements. He also told investigators the two got into an argument and she stabbed him in the hand and jumped out of the truck.

Detectives are withholding the woman's identity until her family is notified.

The reserve deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave during the internal investigation. Reserve deputies are volunteer officers with the sheriff's department who are not on the payroll.

The Officer-Involved Incident Task Force, which includes DASO, LCPD, the New Mexico State Police and New Mexico University are investigating.
