Former LCPD Officer Charged with Trading Drugs for Sex

Las Cruces, NM - An ex-Las Cruces Police Officer who was suspected of trading drugs for sex earlier this summer was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center around 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Alexander Smith, 34, resigned earlier this summer after an internal investigation was opened into allegations that he offered methamphetamine to several different women in exchange for sexual favors.

The Las Cruces Sun-News previously reported that federal authorities declined to prosecute Smith in federal court due to a lack of sufficient evidence, however, he was arrested on Wednesday by New Mexico State Police and charged with Trafficking Synthetic Narcotic Drug and Conspiracy to Commit a 2nd Degree Felony.

Before his resignation in June, Smith had been with LCPD for seven years and resigned at the rank of sergeant.

Smith was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on bonds totaling $20,000.
