LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) - A Las Cruces man is facing charges after a rollover crash that injured him and his 13-year-old nephew Sunday evening on Highway 70.
Christian Echavarria-Martinez, 29, is charged with negligent child abuse and driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
According to police, they were called out to a rollover crash on Highway 70 at Hollman Rd. around 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening. When they arrived, they learned Echavarria-Martinez and his nephew were injured in the crash and were both transported to a local hospital.
Investigators at the crash scene reported finding several cans of beer and allegedly suspected a strong odor of alcohol coming from Echavarria-Martinez before he was taken to the hospital.
During the investigation they allegedly learned that he'd left work around 5 p.m. and was driving east on Highway 70 with his nephew. He is suspected of drinking beer before getting on the Highway and stopping for more alcohol at the Pic Quick store on Sonoma Ranch Blvd.
Police suspect he continued drinking as he got back onto the Highway.
As his Honda Civic approached the Hollman Road exit, Echavarria-Martinez allegedly lost control of his car overcorrected, causing it to roll three times before coming to a rest on it's roof.
LCPD say Echavarria-Martinez was not booked into jail, because he was in the hospital at the time of the crash. He is expected to receive a court summons to appear in court at a later date.
