Louisiana woman ID'd as suspect shot, killed by reserve deputy

Doña Ana Co., NM (KTSM) - The woman killed by a reserve deputy in Doña Ana County Halloween night was identified as Heather Denean Bubrig, 37, of New Orleans on Thursday.

Investigators say Bubrig came at several officers with a sledge axe after walking into one home and breaking into the shed of another in the Fairacres community. She was shot by a responding reserve deputy and pronounced dead at the scene.

Further investigation has revealed that Bubrig and her 51-year-old boyfriend were staying at a Las Cruces hotel after she was released from an El Paso mental clinic earlier in the day.

He told detectives that she got upset with him and threatened to hurt him. She demanded her boyfriend leave the hotel, because she was reportedly convinced someone was trying to hurt her.

As the pair were driving west on I-10, the fight became confrontational and her boyfriend pulled to the side of the road where he told investigators she tried to walk into traffic. In an attempt to restrain her, he was stabbed in the hand.

Two drivers called 911 reporting the fight between the couple along I-10 and shortly after he was stabbed, Bubrig's boyfriend also drove away and called 911 for help.

Just after 9 p.m. another 911 call came in from a homeowner in Fairacres reporting a woman matching Bubrig's description had walked into his home, stating that someone was trying to kill her. A second call came in shortly thereafter, reporting the same woman was in the shed behind a home.

Several officers, including sheriff's deputies, a reserve deputy and an officer from the Mesilla Marshal's office arrived on La Pradera Road and approached the shed the woman was in. Investigators say she came out of the shed with a sledge axe and came toward the reserve deputy who then fired at least two shots at the woman.

The Mesilla officer attempted CPR, but attempts were unsuccessful. Brubrig was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy was performed on Bubrig on Thursday, according to officials with the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office. Results are expected in the next six to eight weeks.

The shooting is still under investigation by the Officer-Involved Incident Task Force. The 47-year-old reserve deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
