Man suspected of sexual assault of 12-year-old arrested

LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) - A Las Cruces man was taken into custody by police Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl.

Vidal Galvan Jr., 42, who is a Las Cruces resident, but does not have a permanent address, is charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of attempted criminal penetration of a minor.

A warrant for Galvan's arrest was issued on September 18, he was located by LCPD on Monday and taken into custody.

The incidents are alleged to have happened between July 12-14.

Investigators say that Galvan attempted to sexually assault the girl by rubbing his hands on her private parts and telling her he "wanted and needed her."

The girl reached out to authorities within a week of the alleged assault to advise them of the allegations. Police asked Galvan to take a polygraph test which he allegedly failed, according to court documents.

Court documents also allege that Galvan later admitted to assaulting the girl, saying that his actions were an attempt to "get back" at the child's mother.

At the time of his arrest, Galvan also had 46 outstanding bench warrants out of municipal and magistrate courts. He is being held in the Doña Ana County Detention Center without bond.
