NC9 Celebrates Founder's Day of Caring

It's a day to give back to the community -- Founder's Day is a day where all employees of Nexstar, our parent broadcasting company, volunteer to give back in their communities.

This is the 21st year that Nexstar has organized Founder's Day of Caring. Here at home, our employees sorted more than 6,000 pounds of food at the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank.

Joe Hernandez, a volunteer coordinator at the food bank says that volunteers are what keep the food bank running.

So you guys here being the second year its a lot of fun you guys learn a lot and when you guys come and other volunteers help us out we get more than what we process with two volunteers," Hernandez said.

The two volunteers Hernandez is talking about are the only two employees with the food bank that are in charge of sorting through the millions of pounds of donated food. Along with donations the food bank says the one thing they really need are volunteers to help sort and process the food.

News Channel Nine's Chief Meteorologist Chuck Debroder, one of nearly 40 employees volunteering today. "Its so important to volunteer because it could be your neighbor, your co-worker or  that really needs this food to carry them through a month and help them through tough times, Debroder said.

It is through volunteer work like this that KTSM News Director Elizabeth O'Hara says her crew comes together as a team for the betterment of the community.

"For us this is really going above what our branding is as you know we are known in the community as 'El Paso Proud' but this is also an opportunity to go beyond news excellence but also to show that we are apart of the community we are ingrained and we often know that there are members of our community that need help," O'Hara said.

To volunteer you can visit the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank located at 9541 Plaza Circle or you can also visit their website at http://elpasoansfightinghunger.org/ .
