New details on 2016 Alamogordo officer-involved shooting investigation

EL PASO, TEXAS - Otero County District Attorney John Sugg held a press conference Thursday afternoon regarding their findings in the 2016 Alamogordo officer-involved shooting.

Lapel camera video and radio calls from the night 33-year-old Alamogordo Officer Clint Corvinus was shot and killed were released.

Sugg says Officer Corvinus and Officer Christopher Welch were field training the day of the shooting. Both officers were going through a "shadowing phase" where Officer Welch would be taking over as the primary officer.

According to Sugg, the officers were in a patrol unit when they recognized Joseph Moreno from a previous briefing and after verifying that he had five active warrants, they followed him on foot.

"Moreno reached into a bag that he had around his waist area and pulled a .357," says Sugg.

The DA says Officer Welch fired at Moreno and hit him on the hip. The video shows Moreno getting up again.

Sugg says Moreno then began to fire back at the officers and one the bullets hit Officer Corvinus. Officer Welch then reportedly shot eight rounds at Moreno, ultimately killing him at the scene.

According to Sugg, Officer Welch shooting Moreno was justified after the investigation.
