Pipeline explodes in Eddy County, residents in area asked to self-evacuate

CARLSBAD, NM (KRQE - Residents in Eddy County are being asked to self-evacuate after a pipeline explosion.

The explosion is between Loving and Carlsbad and happened around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Eddy County Emergency Management briefly closed Highway 285 and Highway 31 in both directions. Highway 285 has now been reopened to two lanes, but Highway 31 to Carter is still closed at this time and will remain closed until the scene is cleared.

Officials say no homes are being impacted at this time, but there are some residents without power.

Officials are also not confirming who the pipeline belongs to, but says they are speaking to four different companies.

Residents in a 2-mile radius are being asked to self-evacuate while authorities work to stabilize the situation.

There is no other information at this time.
