Special Report: Baby in a box

El Paso, Texas (KTSM) - It’s not your average cardboard box, when you first hear about it the idea may sound odd. It’s called The Baby Box and it's meant to provide a safe sleeping space for a baby.

"The concept in itself kind of made me nervous", says Toisha Spates who is expecting her first child.

The Baby Box originated in Finland but is now making its way in to the United States, including here in El Paso.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were about 3700 sudden unexpected infant deaths in 2015. Twenty-five percent of those deaths were caused by accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.

Recipients of the box aren't only given a pretty box, but also access to the educational tools for before, during and after pregnancy.

"It really is that educations component that we really want to provide the community", says Lety Knight with the Sun City Doulas.

Knights says anyone in the community can pick up a box regardless of their economic background.

So how do you get you're own box?  All you have to do is set up a profile at Baby Box University and complete the San Antonio's BEST syllabus. Once you're done with that you will get a certificate of completion, you can then take that certificate to one of the Sun City Doulas distribution days and pick up your free box.

Of course, The Baby Box isn't for everyone. There's nothing wrong with a crib or a bassinet, but the box does provide a new and affordable alternative for parents.

The Baby Box Co. suggests the boxes are used as the primary sleeping location for the child until they are about 5-6 months old.
