EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - TxDOT is getting ready to launch its annual "Click it or Ticket" campaign on Monday, May 22nd.
The agency says 994 people died last year because they weren't wearing a seat belt - an increase of 9% from 2015. According to TxDOT officials, 1 in 10 Texan's don't buckle up.
Throughout the two week campaign, there will be additional enforcement on the roads. TxDOT says not following the law can earn you a fine of up to $200.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the "Click it or Ticket" campaign has saved more than 5,000 lives since its inception 15 years ago.
The campaign ends Sunday, June 4th.
