Woman dead, officer injured following Ruidoso Police shooting

RUIDOSO, NM (KTSM) - A woman is dead and a Ruidoso Police Officer is recovering in the hospital after a shooting in Ruidoso early Sunday morning.

The incident unfolded around 6:20 a.m. when officers were dispatched to a home on Timberland Dr. to reports of a burglary in progress. Shortly after arriving on the scene, the responding officer called 'shots fired' over the radio.

Investigators say two suspects involved in the burglary were driving separate vehicles when they tried to flee the scene. The officer was hit by both a Ford Mustang, driven by Johnathon Brownell, 28, and a Ford pickup driven by Marlysa Sanchez, 31, both of Los Lunas.

The officer was knocked to the ground after being hit a second time by Sanchez. The officer fired his weapon at both Brownell and Sanchez, hitting both of them. Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brownell attempted to flee, striking another police unit. He was later taken into custody and transported to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment.

The officer was also injured in the incident and is listed in stable condition.

Brownell will be charged with Aggravated Battery upon a Peace Officer, Assault with Intent to Commit a Violent Felony on a Peace Officer, Receiving or Transferring a Stolen Vehicle; Aggravated Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer; and Driving while License Suspended. He will be taken into custody once he is released from the hospital.
