El Paso, TX - "Basketball in the Barrio" was founded in 1992, but reduced its cost to one dollar in 1997. Each child from El Paso's "Segundo Barrio" gets a t-shirt, peace poster, a book from Cinco Puntos Press, and Price's ice cream for their money. The camp features the music, dance, storytelling and art from El Paso's border region. "Basketball in the Barrio" is under the umbrella of Athletes United for Peace, and operates as a nonprofit through the El Paso Community Foundation. At Basketball in the Barrio, children from Segundo Barrio and Chamizal neighborhoods participate in El Paso's annual summer camp where they gain leadership, literary and basketball skills while celebrating border culture.
