El Paso, TX - Baseball is back in the Borderland. The El Paso Chihuahuas will open their 2017 season, Thursday night at Southwest University Park against the Las Vegas 51s.
The Chihuahuas are coming off a championship season last year, but will now turn the page to 2017, looking to defend their Pacific Coast League title. They'll have to do so without the services of Manny Margot, Hunter Renfroe, and Austin Hedges, who are all now playing with the big league club, the San Diego Padres.
For the new look Chihuahuas, Opening Day is just as special for them as it is for the fans. "At heart, we're all little kids playing a little kid's game," said Chihuahuas infielder Jamie Romak. "You spend an off-season trying to master your craft. You get to the point now where it's time to apply that and compete. The competitive nature brings out the butterflies and all that."
Chihuahuas outfielder, Jabari Blash played in El Paso last season, but has yet to experience an Opening Day in the Sun City. "It's just a great day. You look forward to starting the baseball season over again and it's day 1. It's usually a very spectacular day," said Blash. "Your adrenaline is going, you're ready to get back on the field, and get another year going."
First pitch on Thursday from Southwest University Park is at 7:05pm.
