Three wins were the highlight of UTEP's second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Tournament on Thursday in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Miners are playing in the consolation bracket of the tournament at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
"We competed much better today," first-year head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We still have a lot of work to do."
Freshman Erandi Martinez slipped by Southern Utah's Mikala Lowrance, dropping the first set 2-6 but rallying to take the match with 7-5 set two win and followed with a 10-3 triumph in the third set. The win marked Martinez's fifth win in the fall season.
Senior Lois Wagenvoort followed suit, handling Yadira Rubio, of rival NM State, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Milena Baigorria completed the trio of victories with her 6-3, 6-2 dominance of Boise State's Jovana Kuljanin.
In other action, junior Maria Paula Medina fell to Vanessa Timm of Boise State 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Alisa Morozova dropped to Weber State's Tereza Plizova 6-2, 6-1.
The Miners will each play one more singles bout and two doubles matches tomorrow before heading back to El Paso on Saturday.
